Probably the easiest of all
the Mount Shasta pika localities to get to is on the west
side of Gray Butte. The site is easily hiked to by
starting at the Panther Meadow campground. Walk on the
trail to Gray Butte/South Gate across the base of Panther
Meadows. Shortly after the trail leaves the meadow,
it starts to ascend. Follow this trail for only a little
ways before contouring off trail toward Gray Butte, which
will shortly become visible through the trees. I found pika on this large slide in September, 2011. Click on the blue star marker to see an image of this talus slope. |
